Germany's opportunity landscape for international applicants is built around universities, a few large funders and public research institutions. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the main national scholarship body and maintains a scholarship database, while party-related foundations and business-affiliated organisations also fund international students. Admission is handled by universities, which require a recognised school-leaving qualification; applicants whose certificate is not recognised usually need a preparatory college (Studienkolleg) first.

For a study visa, embassies generally ask for an admission letter stating the course, start date and language of instruction, proof of language skills (typically at least B2 in the language of instruction unless the university confirms it or a preparatory language course is planned), health insurance, and proof of funds, most often through a blocked account opened before applying. Students may work only to a limited extent. After a German degree, graduates can obtain a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for qualified work, during which any job is allowed, and can later switch to a work visa or EU Blue Card.

Common errors include treating language proof as optional, opening the blocked account too late, and starting the visa process without a confirmed university admission. Application deadlines are set by each university and can fall many months before the semester starts, so early planning matters. Requirements also differ between German embassies, so applicants should follow their own mission's guidance.
