China's best-known route for international applicants is the Chinese Government Scholarship, applied for through an online system with an agency number. In embassy-based routes the number comes from the local Chinese embassy, whose notice also sets the deadline and any paper package. Applicants usually need a pre-admission document, such as a letter from the target university or a professor; bachelor's applicants may need a CSCA score report, and a foreigner physical examination form is included.

Embassy notices have shown windows closing in January or February for September entry, with dates differing by country. Admitted students apply for an X1 visa when the stay exceeds 180 days, or X2 for shorter study, with an admission notice and, for X1, a JW201 or JW202 form. X1 holders must obtain a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. Employment falls under a separate Z visa category, so a study visa is not a work route.

Common mistakes include using the wrong agency number, submitting only online when the embassy also asks for a hard copy, missing the CSCA sitting, and overlooking the 30-day residence permit deadline. Applicants should read the notice issued for their own country and each university's instructions. Language requirements vary by programme.
