Overview

Yenching Academy is a postgraduate college at Peking University in Beijing, China, and its fully funded scholarship supports a two-year Master's degree in China Studies. About 120 new students join the academy each year, and about 80% of them are international. Candidates from mainland China and from abroad can apply, from any academic discipline, provided they hold or are pursuing a Bachelor's degree.

What you get

The scholarship covers full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, round-trip airfare, accommodation in Yenching Academy House, research-related expenses and basic medical insurance.

Scholars choose one of six research areas and write a thesis under faculty guidance: economics and management, history and archaeology, philosophy and religion, politics and international relations, law and society, and literature and culture. Graduates receive a Master's degree in China Studies from Peking University, with the degree title matching the research area.

Who can apply

There is no strict age limit, although generally no one over 28 has been admitted. Applicants must have finished a Bachelor's degree or expect to graduate by August 31, 2027, with an outstanding academic record, a strong interest in interdisciplinary China studies, proficiency in English, and evidence of extracurricular involvement, community engagement, social responsibility and leadership potential.

Requirements

The application includes an online form, a personal statement of up to 750 words, a statement of research interest of up to 1500 words excluding citations, a CV, official transcripts, diplomas or certificates of enrollment and two academic letters of recommendation. English proficiency scores include IELTS Academic 7.0 overall or TOEFL iBT 100 overall, among other accepted tests taken after September 1, 2024. Applicants whose native language is English, or who completed an English-taught degree at undergraduate level or above, are exempt. Applicants from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and mainland China must submit test scores.

Key dates

The application deadline is 30th November 2026, for the 2027 cohort.
