Opportunities in the Netherlands

Dutch higher education applications run through the institutions themselves. Most programmes require registration in Studielink, the national application portal, although some institutions use a different method for students from abroad. The standard deadlines are 15 January for programmes with limited places (numerus fixus) and 1 May for all others, but institutions may set their own dates, so the programme page should be checked first. Scholarship options on the Study in NL site include the NL Scholarship (Holland Scholarship), Erasmus+ and the MENA Scholarship Programme; the Orange Knowledge Programme has ended.

Students who need a residence permit do not apply for it themselves: only a recognised sponsoring institution can submit the application. Permit holders must study full-time and earn at least half of the credits each year. Work alongside study is limited: employers need a work permit, and students choose either up to 16 hours a week or full-time work in June, July and August. After graduating, an orientation year permit lets graduates look for work or start a business, and applications are accepted within three years of graduation.

Typical mistakes include missing the 15 January or 1 May dates, applying to more than two limited-place programmes in one year, which is not allowed for most programmes, and assuming the student files the permit application. Language requirements are not set nationally, so applicants should read the admission page of the institution and programme.
