Health opportunities

Health opportunities range from internships and volunteer roles to junior professional schemes, research training, consultancies and staff posts. The World Health Organization lists an Internship Programme for students and recent graduates, a Junior Professional Officer Programme, a Young Professionals Programme for people from a specific list of least developed countries, and UN Volunteers roles. Its internships last from six to twenty-four weeks, and applicants must be enrolled in a relevant field or have finished within a limited period. Research funders such as Wellcome classify schemes by career stage, including postgraduate training and early-career awards.

WHO states that applications are made only through vacancy notices in its Stellis recruitment system. Applicants build an online profile with accurate work and education details, and shortlisted candidates complete an assessment and a competency-based interview. Proof of enrolment, a declaration of interests and a medical certificate are requested only before an offer, and documents should not be sent unless asked. Selection can take weeks or months, and only shortlisted candidates are contacted.

Vacancies are posted continuously, each with its own deadline, so there is no single application season. Competition is strong. Typical mistakes include applying outside the official system, overlooking requirements such as nationality of a member state or the field of study, sending unrequested documents, and underestimating living costs at duty stations such as Geneva. Research awards follow published calls, so scheme pages should be checked for current status.
