Overview

Ryft is a regulated payment facilitator and authorised payment institution that builds payments infrastructure for marketplaces, SaaS platforms and multi-party ecosystems. It is hiring a full-time Tech Lead in Manchester, United Kingdom, to head its Card Present squad, the team responsible for in-person payments.

The role is hands-on leadership. The Tech Lead owns the technical direction of the physical terminal estate, writes code, mentors the squad and breaks product requirements into workable architecture. The work centres on how card taps and inserts on physical terminals communicate securely with Ryft's event-driven C#/.NET services on AWS, how funds are split, and how payments settle correctly. It includes connecting smart payment terminals and point of sale systems to the core gateway and marketplace routing logic, handling offline modes, state synchronisation, hardware webhooks and complex failure modes, and keeping the flows secure and compliant in a heavily regulated environment.

Day to day, the person in the role leads delivery of card-present features from design to release, reviews code and sets conventions, and takes responsibility for instrumentation, alerting and incident response in production. They work with the Engineering Manager, Product Managers, hardware vendors and other squads, and are expected to use AI-assisted workflows while staying fully accountable for everything they ship.

Requirements

Ryft is looking for proven experience leading technical projects and guiding small engineering teams, along with significant commercial experience running production backend services. Depth in C#/.NET is ideal, though strong engineers in another modern typed language who can become fluent quickly are encouraged to apply. Candidates should also have hands-on experience running distributed services on AWS, such as ECS/Fargate, Lambda, SNS/SQS or DynamoDB, and sound judgement about service boundaries, asynchronous messaging, eventual consistency and resilience to provider outages.

Experience with payment terminals, card readers or point of sale integrations, Android development for smart terminals, PCI-DSS, EMV or Point-to-Point Encryption, and infrastructure-as-code or CI/CD tooling is a plus.
