Senior Embedded Performance Engineer
Overview
Auterion builds an operating system for autonomous robotic systems that perform surveillance, reconnaissance, inspection, mapping and logistics tasks, and says its software is recognised by the U.S. government as the future standard for its drone programmes. It is hiring a Senior Embedded Performance Engineer in Zurich, Switzerland, for someone who enjoys working close to the hardware and solving problems where milliseconds, bandwidth, startup time and system efficiency matter.
The engineer works within the Apps and Simulation team and with other development teams across the AuterionOS ecosystem, Auterion's custom embedded Linux distribution. Topics include embedded Linux performance and system tuning, low-latency video streaming and media pipelines, platform development in C and C++, Python and Bash, and hardware integration, profiling and end-to-end optimisation. Responsibilities include designing and maintaining performance-critical components, improving system behaviour across compute, networking, video and hardware interfaces with a focus on latency, throughput, reliability and resource efficiency, analysing demanding workloads such as real-time telemetry, video streaming and communication between distributed components, finding bottlenecks from kernel to application code, translating internal and customer use cases into technical solutions, proposing new platform capabilities with measurable performance gains and taking part in stand-ups and release planning.
Requirements
Auterion asks for a BSc or MSc in computer science, software engineering or a related field and five or more years writing object-oriented C++ and Python. Candidates need deep embedded Linux experience including cross-compilation, debugging, profiling and tuning, a strong background in diagnosing CPU, memory, I/O, networking, boot time and latency issues, and experience building low-latency video or data-streaming pipelines. Experience with video codecs, GStreamer and RTP or RTSP, Debian or Ubuntu systems, Bash, systemd, Docker, docker-compose and qemu, ROS2 and DDS-style middleware, networking across several OSI layers and sensor interfacing over USB and Ethernet is sought. Agile team experience is expected, and experience improving build performance with CMake is a bonus.
