Staff Software Engineer, Event Streaming Systems

Overview

Deliveroo is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Event Streaming Systems team within the Storage organisation. This position is based in London, United Kingdom, and is offered as a hybrid role. Visa sponsorship may be available for suitable candidates. As part of Deliveroo's broader structure following its integration with DoorDash, the role involves collaborating across Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt to build and scale technology for a global, three-sided marketplace.

Requirements

Candidates should bring significant experience building, operating, and evolving distributed systems in production, alongside deep hands-on expertise with Kafka or comparable event streaming systems. Strong technical leadership skills are required, including the ability to define technical direction, lead cross-team initiatives, and navigate ambiguity. Applicants need strong coding proficiency in languages such as Java, Go, or Python, as well as solid distributed systems fundamentals covering Linux, networking, storage, JVM-based systems, fault tolerance, and performance tuning. Experience improving production reliability through automation, observability, and incident response is expected, alongside strong communication and stakeholder management abilities. Additional familiarity with open source distributed systems, alternative streaming technologies like Redpanda, WarpStream, AutoMQ, or Pulsar, JVM tuning, multi-region event streaming, or database reliability practices represents a plus.
