Overview
The Guttmacher Institute is recruiting a Director of Global Advocacy to lead its global advocacy strategy for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The full-time position is remote, and candidates outside the United States may also be considered. The stated salary range is $188,800 to $217,100 per year for the New York and Washington, DC market, with actual pay varying by location, experience and qualifications.
Founded in 1968, Guttmacher combines research, evidence-based advocacy and strategic communications to promote sound policies and programmes. The director reports to the Vice President for Global Research and Advocacy and sits on the Research Division Management Team and the Global Management Team.
What the role involves
The director develops and refines the global advocacy and communications strategy, monitors political and policy developments, and contributes to discussions on the post-2030 development agenda, including SRHR indicators, targets and accountability. They represent Guttmacher at United Nations processes, the World Health Assembly and regional intergovernmental meetings, and maintain relationships with UNFPA, WHO, UN Women, UNICEF, donors and bodies such as the African Union and European Union. The role builds coalitions with SRHR organisations and civil society, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and turns research into policy briefs, toolkits, dashboards, talking points and position papers. It also involves media engagement, donor cultivation, proposals and budgets, and supervising and mentoring advocacy staff and consultants.
Who can apply
Applicants should have at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in global advocacy, international policy or a related field, substantial SRHR experience and a record of influencing policy outcomes. Experience with UN processes, multilateral agencies, governments and civil society is relevant, as are coalition-building, communications, management and financial skills. Experience in low- and middle-income countries is preferred, and fluency in more than one language, especially French or Spanish, is valued.
Requirements
A Master's degree in public policy, international relations, human rights, public health, international development or a related field is required. The role involves up to 30 percent international travel annually.
