Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) is offering a six-month Research Internship in its Department of Health Determinants, Promotion and Prevention at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland (job reference 2603774). It is full-time and runs from 1 February 2027 to 16 July 2027. The intern contributes to the WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, published every two years for the past 18 years to track tobacco control progress across Member States. The eleventh edition is due in 2027 with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

What you will do

Working under a technical expert, the intern proofreads and cross-checks drafts and revisions of report materials, independently validates analyses in the report, conducts web research, collects information on specific subjects, organizes and validates data and documents, supports preparations for the report launch, and joins departmental projects. Learning goals include understanding global tobacco-control policy, assembling data and preparing analysis, communicating with stakeholders, and seeing how work differs between headquarters, regional offices and country offices.

Who can apply

Applicants must have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time university study in a health or data-science-related subject and be enrolled in a programme leading to a formal qualification. Graduates can apply within 18 months of completing their qualification, and doctoral students are eligible. Relevant fields include public health, health sciences, epidemiology, statistics, data science, health policy and biostatistics. Expert English is essential and intermediate knowledge of another UN language is desirable. Teamwork, clear communication, respect for cultural differences and familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint are expected; research or report-writing experience and statistical software knowledge are desirable.

What you get

Interns receive no salary, but eligible interns may receive a living allowance of up to CHF 739 per month if permanently resident in Geneva or CHF 1,680 per month if resident elsewhere, set individually after a financial disclosure. Geneva interns also receive CHF 20 daily lunch vouchers, and WHO provides medical and accident insurance.
