Overview

The University of British Columbia International Scholars Program provides international students with the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate degree at the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses in British Columbia, Canada. Designed for the September 2027 intake, the programme combines significant financial assistance with academic advising, leadership development, workshops, and other learning opportunities. Award evaluation covers four categories: the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, the Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, the International Impact Award, and the Vantage One Excellence Award. The exact value of each award is determined by the specific category and the recipient's assessed financial need.

Who can apply

Candidates must be international students entering university directly from an accredited secondary school on a Canadian study permit. Applicants must be pursuing their first undergraduate degree and must have graduated from high school no earlier than June 2026 for the 2027 Winter Session. Eligible individuals must demonstrate superior academic performance, generally achieving all As or an equivalent standard, and meet UBC general and degree-specific admission requirements alongside the English Language Admission Standard. Additionally, candidates must show significant financial need where their families are unable to cover a major portion of educational costs. Certain degree programmes, including Nursing, Dental Science in Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor plus Master of Management, dual degrees, and specified joint-degree programmes, are excluded from the scholarship.

How to apply

The application process begins by selecting a first-choice and second-choice undergraduate programme and campus, as award consideration focuses on the first choice. Applicants must submit their undergraduate admission application before applying for the scholarship. Candidates need to secure one school nominator and one teacher referee, ensuring these are two different individuals, and complete the scholarship application via the official portal by providing details on extracurricular activities, awards, and four essay responses of roughly 150 to 250 words each. Financial documentation regarding family income, assets, expenses, and resources must also be prepared. Both the nominator and teacher referee must submit their references through the portal, and supporting admission documents must be provided by the relevant deadlines. Select applicants may be invited to complete an online video interview between January and March 2027.

Key dates

The scholarship application opens on 5 October 2026, and the scholarship application deadline is 15 November 2026. The deadline to submit supporting admission documents is 31 January 2027.
