Overview

UNICEF Nigeria is recruiting National Consultants for Adolescent Girls Storybook Translation, translating from English into Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. The job number is 595024, the functional area is Adolescent Development, and the consultancy lasts one month. The duty station is Abuja, Nigeria, with a remote working arrangement. UNICEF is seeking three national consultants, one for each target language.

The storybook was co-created with adolescent girls across Nigeria to highlight their experiences, aspirations and recommendations while promoting positive social norms and gender equality. Translations are meant to make the book and its accompanying multimedia content accessible to Nigeria's major linguistic communities, and to serve as an empowerment tool for girls and an advocacy resource for governments, communities and partners.

What the role involves

Consultants work under the Adolescent Development Specialist and alongside the lead writer. They start with an inception meeting and submit a translation approach, workplan, quality-assurance process and glossary plan. The core task is translating the full storybook and related content while keeping its meaning, storytelling voice, emotional tone, adolescent-friendly language, child-rights messaging and gender-responsive and safeguarding terminology.

Consultants adapt idioms and culturally specific expressions where a literal rendering would be unnatural, without changing the message, and maintain a glossary of recurring terms. They edit and proofread for consistency in names, headings, captions, punctuation and style, take part in review sessions, deliver clean revised versions with a brief response to feedback, and check the designed storybook for accuracy and readability before publication. Final files must be publication-ready in Microsoft Word or another agreed editable format, and should avoid stereotypes.

Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor's degree in translation, linguistics, Nigerian languages, English, communication, literature, education, development studies, gender studies or a related field, plus at least five years of professional experience in translation, localization, editing or multilingual publishing. Experience with educational, adolescent, child-focused or social-development materials and with translating from English into Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo is required. English fluency is required.

Key dates

The post was advertised on 11 August 2026, and applications close on 18 August 2026 at 11:55 PM West and Central Africa Standard Time.
