Overview

Professor Jasmin Fisher's laboratory at the UCL Cancer Institute is looking for a (Senior) Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence for Cancer Digital Twins. The post belongs to a multidisciplinary programme that uses AI to generate digital tumour twins. The programme aims to transform cancer research and precision oncology through a new generation of transparent, interpretable and trustworthy AI technologies that combine machine learning, mechanistic modelling, formal verification and large-scale biomedical data.

The role offers the chance to work at the forefront of trustworthy AI, neurosymbolic reasoning, computational biology and cancer systems medicine in a research environment focused on scientific excellence and translational impact. It suits an ambitious AI researcher who wants to apply modern AI methods to difficult real-world problems in biomedicine.

Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD, or be close to completing one, in computational biology, bioinformatics, cancer biology, systems biology, genomics or a related discipline. They need experience analysing large biomedical datasets, including genomic, transcriptomic and multi-omics data, and strong programming skills in R, Python and MATLAB, together with expertise in statistical analysis, data integration and reproducible research. Experience in cancer biology, computational oncology or bioinformatics is essential, and a strong publication record is expected. Candidates should be able to work independently while contributing to a multidisciplinary team, and to explain complex scientific ideas to biologists, clinicians, computational scientists and AI researchers.

What you get

The full-time post is funded for 3 years in the first instance, with a probationary period of 9 months, and is based on site. It is advertised across Grades 6b to 8. Appointment at Grade 7 or 8 depends on the award of a PhD, and Grade 8 also depends on previous experience. Candidates who have not yet been awarded their PhD may be appointed first at Research Assistant Grade 6b, moving to Grade 7 with backdated salary adjustment after the final corrected thesis is submitted.

How to apply

Applications should include a CV and a cover letter that provides evidence against the essential and desirable criteria in the person specification. With a cover letter included, the character-limited motivation field in the application form can be left blank.

Key dates

The closing date is 28 October 2026.
