Postdoctoral Research Associate in Disease Transmission Genetics and Modelling
Overview
The University of Edinburgh is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the CMVM at The Roslin Institute within the Quantitative Biology department. This role is funded by a research grant focused on the genetic and immune determinants, as well as evolutionary constraints, that underlie individual variation in host infectiousness. The position uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system to study infection, immunity, and behaviour in order to understand pathogen transmission. The work involves applying genetic-epidemiological inference and prediction models to project data to produce scientific insights for disease control.
Who can apply
Applications are welcome from candidates worldwide. Applicants must hold a PhD, or be near completion within three months, in a field containing a substantial quantitative component such as quantitative genetics, statistics, bioinformatics, theoretical biology, physics, or applied mathematics. Candidates should have a proven research track record in quantitative genetics and genomics, generalised linear mixed models, Bayesian statistics or MCMC, and mathematical modelling of disease or other dynamic biological processes. Experience in high performance computing is required, specifically in writing efficient computational code for genetic and statistical data analyses and simulation studies. Additional requirements include strong verbal and written communication skills demonstrated through peer reviewed publications and conference presentations, as well as good organisational and time management skills for both independent and teamwork. Knowledge of the genetics of Drosophila or other model species is considered desirable.
What you get
The position offers a salary between £41,064 and £48,822 per annum at grade UE07. The appointment is available on a full time basis of 35 hours per week for a fixed term of 24 months, or potentially longer on a part-time basis of 80 percent until the contract end date of 31 May 2029.
