Overview

The University of Cambridge invites applications for a Post-doctoral Research Associate position within the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University, specifically in the research group of Dr. Francois Nedelec. The appointee will engage in fundamental research in physical biology, focusing on mitotic spindle assembly and chromosome segregation. This role is supported by an ERC Synergy project titled BioMecaNet, conducted in partnership with experimental groups at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund and the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona.

The primary scientific objective is analyzing the core mechanisms of chromosome segregation through advanced mathematical models and computer simulations. The work emphasizes cytoskeleton mechanics during the assembly of a functional bipolar mitotic spindle. The modeling approach combines filament mechanics and cellular chemistry to achieve physically accurate simulations of chromosome bi-orientation and segregation. The position is offered on a fixed-term contract basis funded until 30 June 2028.

Requirements

Candidates must hold, or be very close to completing, a PhD in computational biology, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related discipline. Applicants are required to demonstrate a proven track record of scientific publication. While not strictly mandatory, previous experience in biological system modeling or specific expertise in theoretical biophysics and systems biology is considered advantageous.

The successful candidate must possess effective communication skills suitable for academic presentations and outreach activities. Additionally, applicants must be eligible to live and work in the United Kingdom as required by university policy.

What you get

The appointed researcher will conduct basic research and draft their findings for formal presentation and publication. Beyond core research responsibilities, the individual will have opportunities to help supervise student projects and participate in teaching activities if desired. The role provides avenues for skill development in mathematical modeling, advanced numerical simulations, and machine learning. Employees gain access to a welcoming and collaborative laboratory environment accompanied by family-friendly benefits and professional development offerings provided by the university.

How to apply

Applicants must submit a full curriculum vitae that includes a publication list, a cover letter explaining their suitability for the role, and the contact information for three referees. Submissions should reference the vacancy identifier PT51399. Formal applications are completed online, while scientific questions can be directed to Dr. Francois Nedelec and administrative process inquiries should be sent to the laboratory human resources contact.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 2026-11-06. The funding for this position and the associated contract terms are available until 30 June 2028.
