Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research PhD Studentship (Fixed Term)
Overview
The Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research at the University of Cambridge offers fully funded PhD studentships in placental biology and reproductive science. Founded in 2007, the centre brings together more than 30 principal investigators interested in the placenta, early development and maternal-fetal interactions in pregnancy. They work across Cambridge departments and institutes, including Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pathology, Genetics, the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. A student holds the studentship within the relevant department or institute.
Students present at annual away days and international conferences, attend seminars, take part in Cambridge Reproduction events, follow a Placental Biology Course and join the Postgraduate School of the Life Sciences.
What you get
Studentships cover all University and College fees at home or international rates, plus a stipend of 22,000 GBP per year. Awardees also receive 15,000 GBP for research consumables and equipment and up to 750 GBP for conference travel over the studentship. Study is full time over four years or part time over five years.
Who can apply
Applicants should hold a UK Good II.i Honours degree or the equivalent for degrees from other countries. Because fees can be covered at international rates, the studentships are not limited to UK applicants. Selection considers academic record, referee comments, research experience and achievements, set in the context of each applicant's background and training.
How to apply
Candidates should review the projects on offer for the 2026/2027 cycle and contact potential supervisors before making a formal application following the centre's published instructions.
Key dates
The application deadline is 3 November 2026. Initial video interviews with potential supervisors are held in late November, and shortlisted candidates are invited to a second round in early January.
