Overview

The Division of Biosciences at UCL is looking for a Research Fellow in Evolution and Development to join the group of Dr Sean Stankowski. The division is a leading centre for research and teaching in the biological sciences, with more than 500 staff and over 300 PhD students. The post is funded through a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship.

The Research Fellow will take a leading role in an ambitious project that reconstructs the evolutionary path between different reproductive modes in the marine snail genus Littorina. Specifically, they will lead the strand investigating the molecular and developmental basis of a recent switch from egg-laying to live-bearing. They will design and carry out the experimental strategy, which may include bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, in situ hybridisation, chromatin accessibility assays and proteomics. A research technician will support the project.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and have a strong theoretical understanding of molecular and developmental biology. Experience with single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, in situ hybridisation, differential expression analysis, chromatin accessibility assays and proteomics is expected. The ideal candidate can design and run research independently and is organised, creative and collaborative. Experience integrating multiple data types is highly desirable, and an interest in the genetic and developmental basis of reproductive differences, or experience with molluscs, would be advantageous.

What you get

The full-time, fixed-term post pays £43,981 to £48,679 per annum and follows a hybrid working arrangement. UCL offers professional development support, including access to training courses and to international and domestic conferences. The position includes time to pursue personal research interests and opportunities to work with and visit project partners at other research institutions.
