Overview

The School of Life Sciences at the University of Warwick is recruiting a Research Fellow in the Nelson group, funded by a BBSRC standard research grant. The project investigates conserved gene regulatory programmes in nervous system and pancreas development. It asks why enhancers at critical transcription factor genes are so strongly conserved across jawed vertebrate evolution, which illuminates how the vertebrate body plan is maintained and how enhancer mutations can lead to developmental disorders.

The post holder works with the Nelson group, collaborates with another School of Life Sciences group on imaging analysis of human hindbrain organoids and works with the Bioinformatics and Digital Health Research Technology Platform on single cell multiomics analysis. The project is based in the 54.3 million GBP Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building. The contract is full time and fixed term, with hybrid working.

What you will do

The successful candidate leads an experimental genetics project using human pluripotent stem cell-derived organoids and zebrafish to study the function and regulatory logic of highly conserved enhancers. The work combines CRISPR genome editing, single cell multiomics, phenotypic analysis of organoids and detailed functional analysis of enhancer composition with zebrafish reporter assays, and includes leading day-to-day experimental and analytical work.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a PhD in vertebrate developmental biology, gene regulation or a closely related field, with substantial practical experience in experimental molecular biology, and be able to establish and optimise new techniques and run several experimental lines in parallel. Strengths are expected in some of the following: stem cell maintenance and differentiation, CRISPR/Cas9 editing, functional genomics, single cell multiomics and zebrafish imaging. Full training is provided where needed.

What you get

The salary is 35,608 to 46,049 GBP per year. Candidates near submission of their PhD or awaiting conferral are offered a Research Assistant post at 34,610 GBP per year and promoted to Research Fellow at 35,608 GBP once the PhD is confirmed.

Key dates

The closing date is Sunday 8 November 2026 at 11:59pm UK time.
