Overview

The University of Bristol is offering a fixed-term, full-time position as a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in Organic Geochemistry within the School of Earth Sciences and the Organic Geochemistry Unit. The project investigates how carbon is taken up during photosynthesis by examining how photoautotrophic phytoplankton fractionate and biosynthesis carbon, which has implications for understanding phytoplankton evolution and historical carbon dioxide changes across geologic time. The appointment is expected to begin around November 2026 and will run for 17 to 19 months, with the contract concluding on 6 August 2027.

What you get

The position offers a full-time work pattern of 35 hours per week, scheduled from Monday to Friday on an onsite work arrangement. The salary ranges from 39906 to 50253 British Pounds per annum, spanning Grade I at 39906 to 44746 British Pounds and Grade J at 44746 to 50253 British Pounds. The postholder will have opportunities to explore organic geochemistry and biosynthesis questions, present findings at international conferences, develop scientific and interdisciplinary ideas, collaborate locally and internationally, take on leadership opportunities such as student supervision, and access resources for career development through workshops and training.

Requirements

Applicants should preferably hold a good honours degree or equivalent, alongside a PhD in Chemistry, Organic Geochemistry, Earth Sciences, Geomicrobiology, Biology, Geography, or a related discipline. Candidates need the ability to proactively and creatively implement wet chemistry and instrumental solutions to complex problems, as well as relevant experience in designing laboratory experiments, analysing lipid content in phytoplankton, and working with environmental isotopes. Additional preferred qualifications include evidence of effective science communication through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, experience liaising with external collaborators, and involvement in outreach activities. Appointment specifically at the Senior Research Associate level requires prior research and undergraduate or graduate supervision experience at the postdoctoral research associate level or equivalent industry level, alongside experience in leading independent project management.

How to apply

Applicants must include a full academic CV and a brief one-page cover letter containing a statement detailing how the post will build upon previous experience and what the applicant will bring to the project. Applications are submitted via the application button provided by the employer, and informal queries can be directed to Caitlyn Witkowski.

Key dates

The project is scheduled to begin around November 2026. The application window closes at 23:59 UK time on 29th October 2026.
