Overview

The Francis Crick Institute in London is looking for an AI/ML Postdoctoral Fellow to join the F Rouhani Lab. The fellow will lead a computational project investigating how clones carrying driver mutations interact with their microenvironment in chronic liver disease and liver cancer. The role is a cross-institutional collaboration between the Crick and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, working closely with the Lotfollahi Lab, which is known for generative AI and foundation models for spatial and single-cell genomics.

Responsibilities include developing AI and machine learning methods for spatial genomics and histology data, applying graph neural networks, transformer models and generative AI to study clone and microenvironment interactions, and integrating spatial transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing and imaging datasets. The fellow will also design benchmarking strategies and reproducible computational workflows, carry out clonal reconstruction and spatial mapping from genomic data, collaborate with computational scientists, clinicians and experimental researchers at both institutes, and lead publications and conference presentations.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a PhD, or be near submission, in computational biology, machine learning, computer science, statistics or a related quantitative discipline. They need experience building and applying deep learning or AI/ML methods to complex scientific data, strong Python and scientific computing skills (for example numpy, pandas, PyTorch or JAX), and experience with biological, imaging or spatial datasets or strong evidence of adapting quickly to new data domains. Excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary, cross-institutional teams are also expected.

What you get

The post is full time and fixed term, based on site at the Crick in London, with pay from £47,500 plus benefits, depending on skills and experience. The Crick is a biomedical discovery institute founded by the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL, Imperial College London and King's College London. Since 2016 it has been housed in a purpose-built building in central London that brings together about 1500 scientists and support staff.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 22 November 2026.
