Overview

Epic Games is offering a machine learning research internship within the Epic Research department, which focuses on advanced research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, character animation, and digital humans. The research contributes to products such as Fortnite, Unreal Engine, MetaHuman, and developer tools. Interns work alongside research scientists and engineers on topics including AI-backed interactive characters, game agents, 3D tracking, reinforcement learning, speech systems, world building, AI-assisted development, multi-modal diffusion models, player safety, user experience improvements, content localization, and model distillation.

Who can apply

Applicants must be current PhD students or recent PhD graduates who finished their degree within the past 12 months in Computer Science, Mathematics, AI, or a related field. Candidates need a record of publication in top conferences or journals and must hold an existing, legal right to work in their given location for the full internship duration, as visa sponsorship or support is not provided. The role is open to applicants in select regions across North America and Europe, including Manchester in the United Kingdom and locations in California, New York City, and Washington.

Requirements

Candidates are required to have experience implementing deep learning algorithms for problems in computer vision, natural language processing, or speech and audio processing. Practical knowledge of state-of-the-art machine learning methods, such as Transformers, diffusion models, and reinforcement learning, is necessary. Applicants must also possess experience with post-training foundation models, including supervised fine-tuning, preference training, and reinforcement learning, alongside strong AI coding and experimental engineering skills. Game development experience in C++ or C# is considered desirable.

What you get

This is a paid research internship that runs for an initial duration of 5 to 12 months, depending on the location. Participants can work either full-time at 40 hours per week or part-time at 20 hours per week. Interns have the opportunity to regularly publish their research in top-tier conferences and participate in company benefit plans and discretionary incentive programs, subject to specific plan terms.

How to apply

Recruitment is handled on an ongoing basis until teams find an ideal match. The program features flexible start dates throughout 2026 and 2027.
