Machine Learning Intern
Overview
Epic Games offers paid machine learning research internships within its Epic Research department, led by Lucia Specia and Michael Black. The initiative focuses on developing machine learning and artificial intelligence applications for games and engine technology, reaching numerous players and creators. Interns collaborate with research scientists and engineers across various topics such as AI-backed interactive characters, game agents, 3D human and object tracking, reinforcement learning, speech systems, world building, AI-assisted development, physical intelligence, multi-modal diffusion models, player safety, user experience enhancement, content localization, and model distillation. The duration lasts between five and twelve months initially, depending on location, with flexible start dates throughout 2026 and 2027. Work schedules can be full-time at forty hours per week or part-time at twenty hours per week.
Who can apply
Candidates must be current PhD students or recent PhD graduates who finished their degree within the past twelve months in Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field. Applicants need to hold an existing, legal right to work in the United Kingdom, United States, or Canada for the entire duration of the internship, as visa sponsorship or support is not provided. The roles are based in select regions within the UK, US, or Canada, with specific physical office availability mentioned for London and Manchester in the United Kingdom.
Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate a record of publication in top-tier conferences or journals and possess experience implementing deep learning algorithms for challenges in computer vision, natural language processing, or speech and audio processing. Practical knowledge of state-of-the-art machine learning methods, including Transformers, diffusion models, and reinforcement learning, is necessary. Candidates are also required to show experience with post-training foundation models such as supervised fine-tuning, preference training, and reinforcement learning, alongside strong AI coding and experimental engineering abilities. Game development experience utilizing C++ or C# is considered desirable.
