Machine Learning Intern
Overview
Epic Games, the company behind Unreal Engine, Fortnite and Rocket League, is offering paid machine learning research internships through Epic Research, which works on machine learning, AI, character animation and digital humans. Locations are selected regions within the UK, US or Canada, and the posting lists Montreal and Manchester. The internships last five to twelve months initially, depending on location, with flexible start dates throughout 2026 and 2027, and can be full time at 40 hours a week or part time at 20 hours.
What you will do
Interns work with research scientists and programmers at the intersection of vision, language, speech, embodied agents and game development. Topics include AI-backed interactive characters, game agents, 3D human and object tracking, reinforcement learning for embodied behaviour, speech and conversational agents, world building and game logic generation, AI-assisted game development, multimodal diffusion models, player safety, personalised recommendation, content localization and model distillation for realtime performance. Research by Epic interns is regularly published at top conferences.
Who can apply
Epic is looking for current PhD students and recent PhD graduates, within 12 months of graduation, in computer science, mathematics, AI or a related field. Applicants should have a record of publication at top conferences or journals, experience implementing deep learning algorithms for computer vision, language or speech, hands-on knowledge of Transformers, diffusion models and reinforcement learning, experience with post-training of foundation models, and strong AI coding skills. Game development experience in C++ or C# is desirable.
Applicants must already hold the right to work in the UK, US or Canada for the full internship, and visa sponsorship or support is not available.
