Overview

The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University offer experienced professionals a nine-month residential programme running from September to May in Stanford, California. The initiative gives participants dedicated time away from daily duties to investigate critical issues facing the journalism industry, strengthen democratic resilience, and build leadership capabilities. Fellows take part in weekly cohort meetings, biweekly coaching sessions, customized workshops, and campus activities while collaborating with an international peer group.

Who can apply

The programme is open to experienced journalists and professionals with a minimum of five years of professional experience, though a university degree is not required. Eligible candidates include reporters, editors, producers, photographers, audience engagement specialists, publishers, newsroom operations and strategy staff, and individuals working in organizations that directly support journalism. Applicants may be employees or independent contractors, provided the majority of their freelance work is in the journalism sector.

The fellowship is not open to people seeking an academic degree, public relations or public information professionals, government employees, or full-time academics. Candidates working for government-operated media or organizations lacking editorial independence are ineligible. Additionally, citizens of countries where the United States has suspended J visa issuance cannot apply unless they hold citizenship and a passport from an unrestricted country.

What you get

Successful fellows receive a $135,000 stipend for the nine-month period, alongside Stanford tuition coverage and health insurance. A health supplement is also provided for eligible dependents enrolled in Stanford coverage. Throughout the residency, participants gain access to individual coaching, professional development opportunities, academic resources at Stanford University, and a global alumni network.

Requirements

The fellowship is a full-time commitment that requires participants to live at Stanford University from September through May. Fellows must attend all required weekly cohort meetings, biweekly coaching sessions, and occasional programme events, as well as share insights publicly and collaborate respectfully with others.

How to apply

Candidates must create an account on the designated online application portal, answer initial screening questions to determine the appropriate application path, and complete the online form detailing the journalism-related question or challenge they wish to examine. Applications must be submitted directly through the platform before the final deadline.

Key dates

The application deadline is 2 December 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Prospective applicants can attend online informational webinars scheduled for 21 October 2026, 5 November 2026, 6 November 2026, and 12 November 2026.
