Opportunities in Uganda
15 open opportunities right now · intro written and source-checked Nov 3, 2026
Opportunities in Uganda are shaped by its universities, a large international and humanitarian presence, and regional research programmes. Makerere University advertises research positions, postdoctoral calls and scholarships through its portals. Kampala also hosts the UN Resident Coordinator's Office, and agencies such as WFP, UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, WHO and UNDP work in the country on refugees, food security, health, justice and climate resilience, alongside NGOs and other development employers.
UN internships are unpaid and open to graduate students, final-year bachelor's students, and graduates who can start within a year; applications go through the UN careers portal. Foreign students need a student pass, issued online for three, six or twelve months and supported by an admission letter, a school support letter, a passport with sufficient validity, and proof of payment. Employment requires a work permit, which is also applied for through the Immigration portal.
Common mistakes include assuming internships are paid, overlooking the student pass, and submitting documents that do not match the portal's checklist. Applicants should check that an employer will support a work permit before relying on an offer. Intakes and vacancy dates differ by institution and agency, so each announcement is a safer guide than a general calendar.
