PhD Studentship: Sustainable Aviation Fuel Thermochemical Modelling ENG422
Overview
This doctoral research position focuses on thermochemical modelling for sustainable aviation fuels in partnership with Airbus. The project uses a mix of computational, analytical, and machine learning methods to examine heat transfer and the physical and chemical behaviour of fuels under conditions typical of fuel systems, aiming to remove barriers to the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels and support the path to net zero flights. The successful candidate will be based within the Mechanical and Aerospace Systems research group in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham and will also spend part of the PhD period based at the Airbus site in Bristol.
Who can apply
This opportunity is open exclusively to UK citizens eligible for home fees due to funding restrictions. Applicants must possess or expect to attain a high 2:1 or, preferably, a 1st class honours degree in chemical, mechanical, aerospace engineering, or a chemistry or computer science related discipline.
What you get
The studentship provides coverage for university fees alongside a tax-free stipend of £24,000 per annum for a duration of four years. Scholars receive supervision support and training from both the university and Airbus, with potential opportunities to engage in practical aspects of fuel system design and testing.
Requirements
Essential qualifications include a rigorous approach to research, enthusiasm, self-motivation, strong teamwork abilities, and solid knowledge or experience in heat transfer. Candidates with prior experience in computational fluid dynamics, chemistry, machine learning, or computational heat transfer will hold an advantage.
How to apply
Interested candidates must submit applications containing a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and academic transcripts via email to Hadrian Moran. Suitable applicants will undergo an interview process prior to being invited to complete a formal application. Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Carol Eastwick by email.
Key dates
The application closing date is 2027-01-05.
