Overview

A 3.5-year D.Phil. studentship is available at the University of Oxford within the Department of Engineering Science, focusing on the multiscale physics of deformation and failure in polymer networks. Supervised by Professor Laurence Brassart, the research project aims to develop a mesoscale modelling framework that predicts the time-dependent deformation and failure of polymer networks using coarse-grained discrete-network models. The start date for the position is October 2027.

Who can apply

This funding opportunity is open to Home students who hold a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours, or an equivalent qualification, in fields such as Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Materials, or Chemistry. Candidates should possess strong analytical and mathematical skills, programming experience in languages such as Matlab, Python, or C/C++, and excellent English written and spoken communication skills. While prior experience in this specific research area is not required, a foundational background in continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, or statistical physics is considered desirable.

What you get

The successful candidate receives full coverage of course fees set at the level for UK students, amounting to at least £10,940 per year. In addition, a tax-free maintenance grant stipend of at least £21,805 per annum is provided for the first year and continues for a further two and a half years.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a graduate application form and meet the graduate admissions criteria established by the university. All prospective applicants are required to quote the reference code 27ENGMM_LB in their graduate application and in any correspondence. Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Laurence Brassart.

Key dates

The application deadline is noon on 2 December 2026. The studentship commences in October 2027.

About University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. Teaching there is documented from the late eleventh century, which makes it one of the oldest universities in the world, although its exact founding date is unknown. It has no single central campus, and its buildings are spread throughout the city. Every student belongs to a college, and the colleges operate alongside the university's academic departments, which are grouped into divisions.
