Overview

Brunel University London invites applications for a Research Assistant or Research Fellow position within the Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology. This role is tied to an Innovate UK project titled TURBOCOOLING, which concentrates on energy-efficient and frost-resistant heat exchangers enabled by advanced aluminium brazing. The project seeks to develop advanced aluminium brazing technology utilizing an induction heating system equipped with integrated temperature monitoring and control. The appointment is fixed-term for three months and requires working on site at the Uxbridge Campus.

Who can apply

Applicants are required to hold at least a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field. Additionally, holding a PhD in Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline is considered desirable.

What you get

The position offers a part-time schedule of 9.58 hours per week on a fixed-term contract. The salary varies by role, with Research Assistant compensation ranging from 37118 to 39144 GBP per annum inclusive of London Weighting, and Research Fellow compensation ranging from 41292 to 44762 GBP per annum inclusive of London Weighting, both pro-rata for part-time hours. Additional benefits include an occupational pension scheme, training and development opportunities, a generous annual leave package alongside discretionary University closure days, and various health-related support services.

Requirements

The work entails both experimental and modelling activities related to aluminium brazing. Selected candidates will concentrate on optimising the aluminium brazing process, simulating temperature distributions in aluminium workpieces during brazing, and characterizing the microstructure and mechanical properties of the brazed joints. Duties also involve creating apparatus and methodologies to manufacture high-integrity and high-quality brazed aluminium joints, with the ultimate objective of maximizing mechanical performance and optimising microstructures.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 10 November 2026.
