Overview

This PhD studentship investigates the crustal structure of the Eastern Caribbean volcanic arc, with an initial focus on Saint Vincent. The research aims to understand changes in volcanic activity and transitions from effusive to eruptive behavior by examining the structure and evolution of the magmatic plumbing system within the shallow and lower crust. The selected candidate will work within a large multi-disciplinary research team funded by NERC and will be based at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

What you get

The position provides a fully-funded ARIES studentship covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026/27 period, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are open to international applicants, with the registering university waiving the difference between home and international fees. The funding does not cover relocation costs, living expenses in the UK, visa fees, or the health surcharge. Training includes seismic data processing, tomographic imaging, numerical modelling, and environmental sciences through ARIES, along with potential travel for collaborative visits to the Seismic Research Centre.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a degree in geoscience or a related discipline. While not mandatory, numerical literacy alongside experience with coding tools and Unix-based operating systems are considered desirable. Applicants are also required to submit an ARIES Equality and Diversity Form for each project application they submit.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is December 16, 2026.
