Overview

The University of Edinburgh is seeking a Research Associate to join the College of Science and Engineering within the School of Informatics. The successful candidate will work within the Quantum Software Lab on the RubberDUQ project. The primary focus of the role is developing practical tools and mathematical foundations for hybrid quantum-classical programming, utilizing categorical semantics to provide precise meaning to quantum programs and translating that meaning into correct-by-construction compilers and optimizations.

Who can apply

Applicants are required to hold a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics. Candidates are evaluated on the strength of their experience and evidence across specific areas rather than strict yes/no criteria. Ideal backgrounds include research experience in categorical semantics, programming language theory, compilers, or quantum computing, alongside proven expertise in relevant mathematical or software techniques such as category theory, formal semantics, or compiler implementation. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate high-quality research performance through publications, technical reports, software contributions, or comparable outputs, and possess the ability to communicate complex information clearly in both written and verbal formats.

What you get

The position offers a salary between £41,064 and £48,822 per annum for a full-time schedule of 35 hours per week. The role is offered on a fixed-term contract of 12 months running until December 31, 2027. The working arrangement allows for hybrid options combining remote and on-campus work, and the institution is also open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns.
