Overview

A PhD studentship is available at the University of Nottingham within the School of Chemistry, focusing on the electrocatalysis of sulfur redox in the solid state. The successful candidate will join the lithium-sulfur battery team and the Nottingham Applied Materials and Interfaces Group, contributing to research aimed at developing new energy storage technologies to supersede lithium-ion batteries and support the electrification of the automotive sector.

The selected student will also become part of Cohort 9 of the Faraday Institution PhD Training Programme, which is structured to build the skills, knowledge, and career readiness of UK battery-related researchers. The project involves a combination of synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, and device fabrication.

Who can apply

Applicants must hold or expect to achieve a minimum of a 2:1 Honours degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant academic discipline, such as chemistry, materials science, engineering, physics, or a related field. The studentship covers tuition fees at the Home rate, which includes UK applicants as well as EU applicants who hold pre-settled or settled status and satisfy the residency criteria.

Requirements

Candidates are required to contact Graham Newton by email at graham.newton@nottingham.ac.uk in the first instance to register their interest in the position. Additionally, applicants must complete a short Faraday Institution expression of interest form and submit an application through the University of Nottingham application portal.

Key dates

The start date for the studentship is January 2027. The application closing date is 8 December 2026.
