Postdoctoral Research Associate
Overview
The University of Edinburgh is offering a postdoctoral position within the School of Physics and Astronomy, specifically based in the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics. This role focuses on formal developments and numerical calculations using lattice field theory within theoretical particle physics. The successful candidate will contribute to the STFC Consolidated Grant UKRI4228 titled Particle Theory at the Higgs Centre, carrying out precision lattice QCD calculations and formal work that includes heavy and light quark flavours as well as (semi-)leptonic decays incorporating QED corrections. Calculations will utilize resources from the national supercomputing facility DiRAC. The appointment is structured as a full-time, fixed-term contract lasting for two years, scheduled from October 1, 2027, to September 30, 2029, with a possibility of extension dependent on future funding. The position operates under a hybrid work arrangement.
Who can apply
Candidates must hold a PhD, or be near completion, in Physics, which includes Theoretical or Mathematical Physics. Applicants are required to possess a strong understanding of the Standard Model of particle physics and the lattice formulation of quantum field theories.
What you get
The position provides a salary ranging from £41,064 to £48,822 per annum for a 35-hour work week.
Requirements
Applicants need practical experience in C++ programming within UNIX environments and a demonstrated background in delivering research results academically, which includes a track record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Candidates must also exhibit the ability to work independently with a high level of initiative while maintaining a proactive and flexible approach.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is November 27, 2026, at 23:59. The fixed-term appointment runs from October 1, 2027, through September 30, 2029.
