Overview

The University of East Anglia, through the School of Environmental Sciences, offers a PhD studentship focused on understanding how atmospheric dust affects the Atlantic Ocean and global climate. The Atlantic Ocean has experienced significant warming in recent years due to increasing greenhouse gases and other climate forcing agents. In particular, dust lifted into the atmosphere over Africa and transported across the Atlantic influences sunlight reflection, ocean temperatures, atmospheric circulation, and rainfall patterns. Examining these processes is essential for improving predictions of temperature and circulation changes over the region.

What you get

Successful candidates meeting the UKRI eligibility criteria receive a fully-funded studentship covering university fees and a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026/27 period. The funding also includes a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, for whom the registering university waives the difference between home and international fees. The funding does not cover relocation costs, living expenses in the United Kingdom, visa fees, or the health surcharge. Training is provided in statistical analysis, computer coding, observational dataset interpretation, climate model output, and the design and execution of climate model experiments, alongside training activities within the ARIES DTP.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a degree in a quantitative science. An essential qualification is an interest in data analysis and the numerical modelling of weather and climate systems, while prior experience in coding is considered desirable.

How to apply

Candidates must apply through the designated university application process, ensuring they meet the eligibility criteria outlined by UKRI.
