PhD Studentship: Design Optimisation of Brushless Doubly Fed Machines
Overview
This PhD project at the University of East Anglia looks at the design optimisation of brushless doubly fed machines (BDFMs). These machines are emerging as a promising technology for offshore wind turbine generators because they need only fractional-sized power converters, remove rotor brushes and slip rings, and allow simpler gearbox systems than high-speed generators. These features can mean lower capital and operating costs, greater reliability and less maintenance, all key for wider adoption of offshore wind. Several challenges remain, including relatively low power density and power factor, high vibration levels and complex magnetic field behaviour.
The research proposes design optimisations to improve BDFM performance and make them a competitive alternative to direct drive and medium-speed permanent magnet generators, paving the way for more cost-effective and reliable offshore wind energy systems.
