Overview

The PhD in Comparative History is a four-year doctoral program accredited in Austria and the US, offered by Central European University. The program features an interdisciplinary approach and covers a chronological range from late antiquity to the present day, with geographical strengths in Central Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean alongside research spanning from the US to central and eastern Asia. Students pursue individual research interests rather than faculty-led projects.

During the first year, students are based in Vienna to take courses in historiography, methodology, required languages, and elective classes. The second and third years generally involve archival research, field trips, conference participation, teaching skill development, and organizing workshops. The final year is dedicated to dissertation writing with faculty and peer support. Up to 5 funded studentships are available for the academic year 2027/28 based on academic merit.
