Ghent University Scholarships 2027 (Fully Funded)
Overview
The Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships are fully funded PhD awards in Belgium supported by the university's Special Research Fund (BOF). They follow a sandwich model that builds research capacity through North-South cooperation. Selected candidates spend 24 months at Ghent University in Belgium and 24 months at a partner university in the Global South. The PhD can lead to a joint degree from Ghent University, and projects are expected to address global challenges and sustainable development.
Who can apply
Applicants must be nationals of a selected Global South country. The application is submitted jointly by three people: the PhD candidate, a Ghent University supervisor (promoter) and a supervisor at the partner university in the Global South. All research disciplines are open, with a preference for topics relevant to the North-South context. Only degree-seeking PhD students are eligible, so exchange students cannot apply, and the programme is meant for early-stage PhD candidates. At the fellowship start on 1 October, at least 36 months of PhD research must remain. A Ghent supervisor may support at most two candidates per call, and they must be of different genders.
What you get
The scholarship funds 24 months at Ghent University and pays a monthly PhD salary in line with university regulations. It also includes a bench fee of EUR 310 per month for research carried out in Ghent. A travel budget of EUR 8,000 covers research-related operational costs, the student's travel, and travel costs for both the Ghent and local supervisors.
How to apply
Applications are submitted electronically in English using the completed application form. The Ghent University supervisor must also provide an evaluation of the candidate's research potential and academic capability, along with an ethical and biosafety assessment of the proposed project. Only complete applications sent through the official channel are considered.
