Overview

Two PhD positions are available at Hanyang University ERICA in South Korea through the Human-Centered Technology Lab within the Department of Human-Computer Interaction. Led by Dr. Seulchan Lee, the lab focuses on research in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, and automated vehicle technologies. The doctoral research examines how people interact with automated transportation systems, addressing areas such as driver behaviour and performance modeling, human-machine interfaces of automated vehicles, human-centered explainable artificial intelligence, and human factors and traffic psychology with mixed traffic.

Who can apply

Candidates must have a strong academic or research background in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Human-Computer Interaction, UI/UX, Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Safety Engineering, or related fields aligned with Human Factors and HCI. Applicants from Computer Science and Electrical Engineering will not be considered. Candidates must demonstrate strong written and spoken English skills, meet the minimum admission requirements of the graduate programme, and satisfy the eligibility requirements of the Global Korea Scholarship programme. Preferred qualifications include strong knowledge of statistical analysis or data analytics, experience conducting and analysing user experiments and surveys, experience collecting and analysing physiological data such as EEG or EMG, experience with academic research and publications, and previous research experience related to automated vehicles from Human Factors or HCI perspectives.

What you get

Successful candidates receive placement in the PhD programme at Hanyang University ERICA along with tuition and stipend support provided through the Global Korea Scholarship programme. Students also gain research opportunities within the Human-Centered Technology Lab focusing on emerging Human Factors and HCI challenges in automated vehicles.

How to apply

The initial stage involves lab-level screening and interview selection. Interested candidates must contact Dr. Seulchan Lee with a complete set of application materials, which includes a cover letter, a full CV, academic transcripts, degree certificates, a thesis, and a research statement focused on Human Factors and HCI topics related to automated vehicles. The research statement must demonstrate how the applicant's interests and previous experience connect with areas such as driver behaviour, automated vehicle interfaces, human-centered explainable artificial intelligence, or human factors in mixed traffic.

Key dates

The deadline for contacting Dr. Lee and submitting materials for the lab interview screening process is 31 December 2026. Lab interviews and results are expected around January 2027, followed by the official GKS application expected in early March 2027.
