Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2027 in Belgium | Funded
Overview
The Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships for 2027 support PhD candidates from developing countries who want to carry out development-oriented research under the guidance of Ghent University researchers. The aim is to build research capacity and find solutions to global challenges such as health, water and food, and climate change.
The PhD follows a sandwich structure over four years in total (48 months). It begins with a first research stay at Ghent University of 3 to 12 months, continues with at least 24 months of research in the Global South at a partner institution, and ends with a final stay at Ghent University of 3 to 12 months.
What you get
The scholarship pays about 2,550 euros per month for the 24 months of research carried out at Ghent University. The Ghent supervisor receives a bench fee of 310 euros for each month the student works in Ghent, to cover research and operating costs. A travel budget of 8,000 euros is also provided to cover part of the travel costs of the student, the Ghent supervisor and the local supervisor, along with other operational needs.
Who can apply
Candidates must come from a developing country. A joint proposal must be submitted by the candidate, a Ghent University promoter and a promoter in the Global South. Research topics need to be development-specific. Candidates wishing to pursue a joint PhD degree at Ghent University are encouraged, and female students are preferred.
