Overview

Funding Africa, a strategy and advisory firm that works with ambitious African social-impact organizations during periods of growth and transition, is seeking a Strategic Communications Consultant. The consultant will support a portfolio of African nonprofit and social-impact clients, helping them clarify their positioning, strengthen their narratives, communicate their impact and improve their ability to attract funding, partnerships and influence. The engagement is part-time and remote, with a preference for candidates based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, or Nairobi, Kenya. It starts in September 2026 for an initial three months, with strong potential for extension as the practice grows.

This is a strategy-led role, not primarily day-to-day content management or social media. The consultant will run communications, positioning and narrative audits, research client sectors, audiences and funder landscapes, support and later lead stakeholder interviews and workshops, and turn findings into clear recommendations. Other duties include developing messaging frameworks, value propositions and positioning statements, and producing materials such as fundraising decks, website copy, donor materials, cases for support, case studies, thought leadership articles, toolkits and reports. At first the consultant works closely with the Founder and Managing Director, and is expected to take increasing ownership of client workstreams.

Who can apply

Funding Africa expects the strongest candidates to have around 5 to 8 or more years of experience in strategic communications, international development, philanthropy, social impact, brand or narrative strategy, journalism, fundraising communications or a related field. It wants an exceptional writer and editor with strong research and synthesis skills, experience with nonprofits, funders, governments or other development actors, and an understanding of African development contexts. The firm is particularly interested in people who can present African expertise and leadership without reductive or externally imposed narratives. Experience across several African markets, with international funders, or in fundraising communications is especially valuable.

Key dates

The application deadline is 26 August 2026 at 5:00 PM EAT, and the consultancy is due to begin in September 2026.
