Overview
The University of Virginia (UVA) is accepting applications for a tenured Associate Professor or Full Professor position in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGS), with an anticipated start date of August 10, 2027. The post is in the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in Charlottesville, Virginia. It seeks established scholars whose research approaches gender and sexuality through Global South, transnational, migration, diaspora and Islamic world perspectives. Scholars with expertise in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific are strongly encouraged to apply.
About the role
The department has ten faculty members and supports undergraduate and graduate programs. It welcomes applicants from diverse disciplines, including the humanities and interdisciplinary fields. Interest centres on gender, sexuality, religion, spirituality, migration, transnationalism and diasporic communities, with particular value placed on work about Muslim communities, religious identities, feminist and queer studies, public health, justice and security. Work connected to UVA's Islamic Worlds Initiative is especially encouraged.
The faculty member will teach two courses per semester, conduct scholarly research and publish, mentor students, take part in departmental and university service and support interdisciplinary collaboration.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline. UVA prefers candidates with an outstanding scholarly record, a strong and sustained publication portfolio, excellence in teaching and mentorship, commitment to interdisciplinary work and interest in the department's mission.
