Overview

The America in the World Consortium Postdoctoral Fellowship Program invites applications from recent doctoral degree recipients to conduct advanced research regarding American grand strategy and the global role of the United States. Jointly hosted by Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, and The University of Texas at Austin, the program intends to select up to eight postdoctoral fellows for one-year residential appointments. These positions start in August 2027 and may be renewed for an additional year subject to approval. Selected individuals will be placed at one of the three participating institutions, where they will concentrate on their individual research and writing projects while engaging with local academic networks and campus programs. Depending on the host location and agreement with the consortium directors, fellows may also have chances to contribute to teaching, such as instructing an undergraduate course.

Who can apply

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. by August 1, 2027, in a relevant discipline. The program specifically welcomes doctoral degrees in history, political science, public policy, classics, and political philosophy. Candidates from language studies, area studies, and related fields are also eligible if their research directly engages with United States foreign policy. Preference is given to individuals whose work shows a clear connection to policy and contributes to the study of American grand strategy.

What you get

Selected fellows receive a competitive annual stipend of $73,500 along with access to benefits and full use of campus facilities at the host university. Financial support covers a minimum of 12 months and can extend to 24 months upon renewal. In addition to the stipend, participants are provided with a $7,500 research fund to cover eligible research-related expenses.

Requirements

Applicants must provide a two-page cover letter that indicates their preferred host institution or institutions within the consortium. The submission package must also contain a curriculum vitae, a graduate school transcript, the names of three professional or academic referees who can supply recommendation letters upon request, and an article or writing sample that demonstrates an existing contribution to the field of American grand strategy.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online through Interfolio. Applicants obtain a complimentary Interfolio Dossier account during the application process, allowing them to submit application materials and confidential recommendation letters without charge. Inquiries regarding the fellowship can be directed to Emma Rogers, America in the World Consortium Program Director, at emma.rogers@austin.utexas.edu.

Key dates

The application deadline is December 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The fellowship program commences in August 2027.
