University of Bergen Opens Four-Year Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position in Economics – Apply By 21August 2026
Overview
The Department of Economics at the University of Bergen (UiB) in Norway is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Economics. The post is full-time and fixed-term for four years, with 25% of the time devoted to career development work at the Department. It is meant for an early-career economist who wants to strengthen their research profile, contribute to teaching and move toward a future academic career. The fellow lives and works in Bergen and is expected to be regularly present at the Department.
What the role involves
The fellow carries out an independent economics research project, publishes in international peer-reviewed journals, contributes to the research environment, teaches and supervises students at bachelor's and master's level, and takes part in other academic and administrative activities. Normal teaching is one course per year. On appointment, the fellow submits a research proposal and work schedule for the qualifying work, which must be completed during the employment period.
Who can apply
Applicants need a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent doctoral degree in economics. Candidates who have submitted their thesis for assessment before the deadline may apply, but the PhD must be formally awarded before employment begins. Applicants should show strong research potential and publication prospects, such as papers in respected international journals, revise-and-resubmit decisions, completed drafts, and a coherent research agenda, along with independence, collaboration skills and good communication. Proficiency in Norwegian and/or English is required, and Scandinavian language knowledge is an advantage.
What you get
The gross annual salary is about NOK 685,900 under salary code 1352, with higher pay possible for exceptionally qualified candidates. Benefits include membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, welfare benefits, teaching and supervision experience and career development opportunities.
