Overview

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is recruiting a Registration Associate in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The full-time post is offered under a UNOPS Local ICA-6 contract, equivalent to the General Service GS-6 level, with a monthly salary of MYR 7,209 to MYR 9,132 depending on qualifications and experience. The contract may be extended depending on organizational needs, budget and performance.

The associate joins the Registration Unit, which keeps reliable population data and works with governments, humanitarian partners and other UN agencies so that refugees and asylum seekers receive documentation, protection, assistance and access to long-term solutions.

What the role involves

Reporting to the Head of the Registration Unit or the Assistant Registration Officer, the associate helps put UNHCR registration strategies and procedures into practice, assists in supervising daily registration operations, and conducts registration interviews to UNHCR standards. They guide asylum seekers and refugees on registration procedures and available services, keep accurate records and population data, and support the issuing of identity and entitlement documents.

The role also involves identifying people with specific protection needs and referring them for assistance, working with protection teams to ease access to documentation and services, preparing reports, correspondence and registration statistics, and recommending improvements to procedures.

Requirements

Applicants need either a high school diploma with three years of relevant professional experience or a bachelor's degree with two years of relevant experience. Preferred study backgrounds are social sciences, statistics, mathematics and information technology. Strong computer skills, especially in data management, are expected. Experience with UNHCR's proGres registration software or Digital Gateway, or knowledge of international protection principles, is an advantage. Fluency in English and Malay is required.

UNHCR does not sponsor work visas or permits, so applicants who are not Malaysian nationals must already be authorized to work in Malaysia.

Key dates

Applications close on 20 August 2026. The process may include a written assessment or interview, and only shortlisted candidates are contacted.
