Overview
The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, is recruiting a full-time Communications Intern for its Kenya Country Office in Nairobi. The placement sits within the Communications Unit, which produces stories, videos, photographs, social media campaigns, briefing materials and operational updates about the agency's work with refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people. What you get
The intern gains hands-on experience in humanitarian communications, including media monitoring, digital storytelling, social media management, content creation and event support. Day-to-day tasks include compiling weekly media reports, helping prepare monthly communication reports, fact sheets and briefing kits, updating website content, supporting press briefings and workshops, and producing videos, photographs, graphics and social media copy. Work is supervised by a Senior Communications Associate or another designated supervisor. The target start date is 1 October 2026.
Who can apply
Applicants must be either current undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited institution recognised by IAU/UNESCO, or recent graduates who finished their studies within two years of applying. At least two years of undergraduate study in a relevant field must be completed, and candidates must stay within UNHCR's rules on maximum internship length. English proficiency of at least B2 level, or another UN working language needed at the duty station, is expected.
Requirements
Preferred academic backgrounds include communications, public relations, journalism, media studies, digital communications, marketing, international relations and related social sciences. Desired skills are strong written and spoken English, storytelling, organisation, attention to detail, teamwork and social media experience. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva and photography or video editing tools is an advantage.
