Overview
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) in Montreal, Canada, is recruiting a Project Officer for Strategic Foresight, Research and Country Insights at the P-3 level. The post is a one-year Project Appointment open to internal and external candidates. The approximate annual starting salary is US$97,515, or about US$8,126 per month.
UIS is UNESCO's official statistical agency and the UN depository for internationally comparable statistics on education, science, culture and communication. It is strengthening its foresight, research and methodological innovation work in response to emerging global challenges and discussions on the post-2030 development agenda.
What the role involves
The officer works under the UIS Director and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Foresight, Research and Methodology Section. About 30 percent of the time goes to strategic foresight and horizon scanning, including briefs, trend analysis, scenario analyses and identifying emerging data needs and measurement gaps. About 20 percent is applied research and policy analysis on topics such as well-being, digital transformation, climate change, skills, education quality, equity and lifelong learning.
Around 30 percent covers country-level data work, including maintaining and quality-assuring databases and tools for national SDG 4 benchmark monitoring and producing briefing materials for country engagement. About 15 percent involves indicator development and methodological support, and the remainder covers knowledge management, partnerships and consultations.
Requirements
Candidates need an advanced university degree in statistics, economics, data science, public policy, education, development studies or a related field, with a strong quantitative or analytical component. At least four years of progressively responsible experience is required, including two at international level, along with experience managing or analyzing statistical databases using tools such as Python, SQL, R or Stata. Excellent English is required and French is desirable.
