Overview
UNESCO is seeking an Individual Consultant for Campus Africa Programme Implementation Support, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The six-month consultancy supports the Campus Africa Programme across Eastern Africa, which aims to transform higher education to support inclusive development, innovation and regional integration. The work is carried out through UNESCO's Regional Office for Eastern Africa within the Education Sector, under a Consultant Contract at Level 2 - Middle, and the consultant supports the 2026-2027 workplan. The position is open to external candidates, works on site in Nairobi, and may involve missions in Kenya, EAC Partner States and other Eastern African countries.
The consultant contributes to five areas. The first is completing the Empowering Women in Applied STEM research project in selected countries, including Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Seychelles and Somalia. The second is publishing and sharing pilot-phase applied STEM research covering Ethiopia, Mauritius, Rwanda and Tanzania. The third is AI and higher education, supporting the Education Track of the East African Alliance for Digital Skills, AI Research and Innovation. The fourth is social entrepreneurship for student innovators. The fifth is quality assurance and recognition of qualifications, including dialogue on the Addis Ababa Convention and the UNESCO Qualification Passport. General coordination includes preparing proposals, concept notes and reports, supporting workshops, building partnerships and contributing to resource mobilisation.
Requirements
Applicants need a Master's-level degree or equivalent in education, social sciences, development studies, gender studies, public policy or a related field, and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in higher education programme coordination, research management or policy analysis. Experience coordinating research and multi-partner programmes, producing policy-relevant knowledge products and knowing the Eastern African higher education landscape is expected. Gender equality experience in higher education or STEM, AI or digital skills experience, and UN experience are assets. Excellent English is required and French is an asset.
