Overview

Refugee Biriyani & Bananas (RBB) is looking for a volunteer Trustee Treasurer, also described as an Accounting Specialist, to join its Board of Trustees and oversee the charity's financial health, sustainability and regulatory compliance. RBB is a female- and community-led grassroots organisation that works with people affected by displacement, war, conflict, injustice and instability, with programmes in Greece, Gaza and Cairo. It is a UK-registered charity, number 1189561, that reported total income of 423,041 pounds and expenditure of 373,007 pounds for the year ending 31 March 2025. Because income exceeds 250,000 pounds, it prepares accounts under the Charities SORP and has them independently examined. The vacancy was posted on 27 August 2026.

The Treasurer works with the Chair, CEO, other trustees and staff. Duties include overseeing the annual budget and cash-flow forecasts, supporting fundraising and financial planning, advising on regulatory matters, developing and monitoring financial policies, advising on funds and reserves, reporting on the financial position, overseeing Gift Aid and payroll, monitoring financial risk and international compliance, reviewing transactions in Xero, working with financial advisers, liaising with the independent examiner and overseeing the annual accounts and report.

Who can apply

Candidates need sound financial knowledge, the ability to explain finances clearly, experience with Xero, acceptance of trustees' legal duties and liabilities, support for RBB's values, and familiarity with the Charities SORP or willingness to learn it. A formal accountancy qualification is desirable, as are experience with smaller organisations' finances and payroll, voluntary-sector, Treasurer or trustee experience, senior leadership, analytical strength and IT skills. People new to charity boards, groups underrepresented on boards and those with lived experience of migration or asylum are welcome.

What you get

The post is voluntary and unpaid, though reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed. It takes about six to eight hours a month, with board meetings roughly every 12 weeks by video call and chances to meet in person. Trustees serve an initial three years and may be reappointed.

How to apply

Applicants email a CV and a brief covering letter on their motivation, skills and how they meet the role description, using the subject line Treasurer Vacancy. The Founder and CEO then follows up. After a successful interview, candidates may need background or DBS checks, references and a three-month induction.

Key dates

The closing date is 30 September 2026.
