Overview

The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) is hiring a Communications Manager for its global team. SVRI is a global network that advances research on violence against women, violence against children and other forms of violence driven by gender inequality. It brings together researchers, practitioners, activists and funders, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. The position is full-time and remote, although some travel is needed for in-person meetings and other duties.

The manager will develop and carry out an integrated communications strategy across SVRI's four main areas of work, turning research and evidence into accessible communications that can influence policy, practice, funding and wider public discussion.

What you get

The annual salary is US$35,000 to US$40,000, depending on experience and expertise. Applicants based in South Africa are paid in South African Rand.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a degree or advanced degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or a related field. An advanced degree or experience in areas such as violence against women and children, public health, development or social sciences is desirable. SVRI looks for at least five years of relevant experience, with up to 10 or more years considered.

The work covers three main channels, which are social media, the website and the weekly newsletter, SVRI Update. It includes planning and creating social media content, managing the website with attention to design, accessibility and search engine optimisation, and running email marketing. The manager also produces multimedia materials such as reports, blogs, press releases, podcasts, reels, videos and presentations, builds project-specific communications strategies, translates peer-reviewed research into clear messages, and sets up a monitoring and evaluation plan for communications.

Skills sought include strong writing, design and presentation ability, WordPress or similar CMS experience, Canva, video editing or web design, Mailchimp, knowledge of ethical, trauma-informed and survivor-centred communications, an understanding of feminist approaches, and experience in multicultural remote teams. Fluency in English is required and other languages are highly desirable.
