Senior Backend Engineer - Run & Grow

Overview

SumUp is offering an opportunity as a Senior Backend Engineer within the Run and Grow tribe, based out of the Berlin office in Germany. This role focuses on building platforms and capabilities that assist merchants in discovering, joining, using, and growing with company products. The work centers on turning complex challenges across merchant acquisition, identity, marketing technology, commercial systems, operations, risk, and compliance into reliable products and services. Candidates will collaborate across disciplines and teams to help create scalable ways for SumUp to run and grow.

Requirements

Applicants should possess a strong backend engineering background in Go or be typed-language generalists ready to ramp up quickly. Candidates need experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns, along with fluency in relational and analytical databases like PostgreSQL and Snowflake. The role requires experience building Kafka-based, event-driven systems with an understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns. Additionally, applicants should have experience working in auditable, high-trust systems in domains such as fintech or payments, and familiarity with testing, observability, and incident response practices.
