Overview

The Institute for Employment Research (IER) at the University of Warwick is appointing a Research Fellow to strengthen its research on employment and labour markets. It is looking for a labour economist or other social scientist with high-level quantitative skills who wants to carry out rigorous research on important labour market and related public policy questions.

The postholder will help design and deliver externally funded research, analyse large-scale survey, administrative or linked data, and produce high-quality academic and policy-facing outputs, working with colleagues across IER and the wider university and with partners such as government departments and public bodies. The institute is particularly interested in expertise that complements its work on skills and training, labour market transitions, labour supply and demand, wages, health and job quality, and the evaluation of employment and labour market policies. The role gives the chance to develop an area of research expertise, and subject to successful probation the post is tenure track.

Requirements

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in labour economics or a relevant social science discipline, with a clear research focus on employment or labour markets. They need strong applied quantitative skills, including econometric and statistical methods, and experience analysing labour market data, particularly large-scale survey, administrative or linked datasets applied to policy-relevant questions. They should show a developing programme of substantive research, aligned with IER's existing themes, rather than methodological expertise alone, and be able to communicate findings clearly to policymakers and practitioners. IER is multidisciplinary, so comfort collaborating across disciplines is expected.

What you get

The full-time post is permanent and pays £35,608 to £46,049 per annum. Candidates near submission of their PhD, or whose PhD has not yet been conferred, will be offered a Research Assistant post at the top of Grade 5, £34,610 per annum, and will move to Research Fellow at the bottom of Grade 6, £35,608 per annum, once the award is confirmed.

How to apply

Applicants complete their personal details and attach a CV and cover letter by 11.59pm on the closing date. The full duties and selection criteria are in the vacancy advert on the university's jobs pages.
